Choir opens new season with "Come and try" weeks

Do you fancy trying out your singing voice with an evening at a leading Lothian choir? The Edinburgh Kevock Choir begins its new season in August and hopes to bring in new members in all sections.

Beginning on Tuesday 19 August, our 60-strong mixed voice choir is extending an invitation to anyone interested to come along to one or more of the first rehearsals of its 2025-26 season. Those who do will get a flavour of the choir's varied and entertaining programme. This currently includes a selection of spirituals, Gordon Sumner's "Fields of Gold", "Memory" from CATS, John Rutter's arrangement of "Afton Water", and Raymond Wise's "Shine the Light".

Rehearsals are held in the assembly hall of the Lasswade High School Centre, just a few minutes beyond the City Bypass by car (Lothian bus routes 31 and 46 are nearby). The choir meets each Tuesday from 7.15 to 9pm, and its special invitation runs each week from 19 August to its main Open Evening on 7 October - when there will be a programme specially designed for prospective members.

By then the choir will have given its first performance of the season - an hour-long concert in the stunning acoustic of St Mary's Church, Haddington at 4pm on Sunday 5 October. Leading up to this event, rehearsals will polish the current programme in readiness for the concert. After the Open Evening the choir will begin learning its programme for the Christmas season - which makes it a good time to join!

"We are trying to make it as easy as possible for anyone who would like to try singing with us to have a go", choir president Peter Nicholson explained. "If you can't make it on 7 October - or you just can't wait to give it a try! - do come along any Tuesday before then.

"We are a friendly bunch and we would love to welcome you, whatever your voice range, though we would particularly like to see a few more men joining in. You don't have to read music and we'll make sure you sit next to experienced singers to help you settle in."
